Gaming and Marriage: Finding the Balance Between Fun and Disruption

Let’s face it: gaming is popular. From Mario Kart to Fortnite to Royal Match, gaming is done in basements, in libraries, and in elevators. For some, it’s a way to unwind, blow off steam, and even socialize with friends. However, like any other activity, gaming can interfere with relationships when it becomes excessive and starts to take priority over daily obligations and emotional connections.

When approached with moderation, gaming can be a harmless hobby, similar to going to sports bars to watch football. It provides a means of relaxation and entertainment that, in reasonable quantities, can be negotiated within the context of a healthy relationship. But when gaming becomes excessive, it can lead to significant disruptions in attachment and intimacy, ultimately straining the relationship.

The Impact of Excessive Gaming on Relationships

Time Away from Obligations and Connections

One of the most significant issues with excessive gaming is the amount of time it takes away from daily responsibilities and moments of emotional connection. When gaming begins to dominate a person’s schedule, other important aspects of life, such as spending time with a partner, participating in household chores, and engaging in meaningful conversations, can fall by the wayside.

This imbalance can lead to feelings of neglect and resentment in the non-gaming partner, who may feel burdened with the lion’s share of household and familial responsibilities.

In extreme cases, gaming addiction can burn bridges, leading to the deterioration of the relationship. The gamer’s preoccupation with their virtual world can create a rift that becomes difficult to bridge, resulting in a loss of intimacy and connection.

Enjoying games in moderation can be a healthy part of a balanced lifestyle. However, when gaming begins to elicit protests from a partner, it’s crucial to employ the L-word: LISTEN. Here are some strategies to help find balance:

Open Communication

The first step in addressing the impact of gaming on a relationship is open communication. Both partners should feel comfortable expressing their feelings and concerns without fear of judgment or retaliation. The gaming partner needs to understand the emotional and practical impact of their gaming habits on the relationship.

Set Boundaries and Limits

Establishing boundaries and limits around gaming time can help ensure that it does not interfere with daily obligations and emotional connections. This might involve setting specific times for gaming and ensuring that other responsibilities are met before turning on the console.

Create a Joint Schedule

Create a schedule for gaming that both people in a marriage can abide by. This is the time that needs to be observed. The gamer in question should be the person responsible for concluding their gaming session. Having your partner or spouse stop you makes them act as a parent figure. Not cool!

Prioritize Quality Time

Make a conscious effort to prioritize quality time together. Whether it’s having a regular date night, cooking dinner together, or simply spending time talking, these moments of connection are crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship.
